Update regarding September Voltage Drops

Between the dates of September 11 and September 20, 2024, City of Eudora Public Works staff worked to identify and correct electrical issues causing voltage drops in areas of town serviced by the Winchester and Downtown circuits. After a thorough review, the problems were determined to be with an Evergy transformer. When alerted to this, Evergy coordinated with City staff to perform the needed repairs while maintaining power to the rest of the City.

Evergy has provided an updated statement to the City, which is included below:

The Evergy and the City of Eudora teams met to review the cause of voltage fluctuations in September. With clearer communication and further review of system data, a transformer on the Evergy system appears to have been the source of the issues. While news reports written while troubleshooting was still underway included references to repairs made to the city's distribution system, these do not appear to have contributed to the voltage fluctuations. When notified of the issues impacting Eudora, Evergy responded and addressed the issue in a timely manner.

Since the repairs were performed, the City has not received additional notices from residents regarding voltage drops.

As an electric utility regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission, and based on the Kansas tort claims act, the City is not liable in situations such as this where, through no fault of the City, such electrical utility failure causes property damage or other equipment failure. Staff regularly maintains its infrastructure and responded to the incident quickly and with all due diligence. The City also retained a third-party insurance adjuster to investigate certain claims, who also came to this determination. We regret any inconvenience arising from this incident. If there is documentation the City can provide to assist residents with their own homeowners insurance claims, please contact City Hall by calling 785-542-2153.
