The city Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a house fire on Hurlihe Street early Wednesday morning with people possibly trapped inside. The first Fire Department units arrived on scene within minutes of the dispatch and encountered heavy fire on the first and second floor of a two-story, multiple residence building at 18 Hurlihe St.
Crews began an aggressive interior fire attack and victim searches simultaneously. A second alarm was sounded, bringing in additional equipment and personnel to assist in firefighting operations.
The fire was placed under control and crews started to perform overhaul operations.
There were two injuries due to the fire -- one building resident was transported to a local hospital by Empress EMS with non-life-threatening injuries, and one firefighter was evaluated by an Empress EMS Unit on scene and released without need for transport to a hospital.
The fire inspection division also was on the scene currently, and a fire investigation is being conducted. Early findings indicate the fire doesn't appear to have been intentionally set or be suspicious in nature. Red Cross was contacted to help assist the occupants of the building.
Additional support was provided by the Arlington Fire District, Fairview Fire District, New Hamburg Fire District, Highland Fire District, Roosevelt Fire District, Empress Ems, City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, City of Poughkeepsie 911 Center, City of Poughkeepsie Building Department, Central Hudson, Veolia and the Red Cross.
