USGBC has arrived in Cali, Colombia, this week for the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16). USGBC is engaging with the global community to advance practical solutions for the built environment in an effort to reverse biodiversity loss and enhanceits value. We are one of just a few organizations highlighting the importance of the built environment and urban spaces in halting nature loss and restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services.
COP 16 will feature three main areas of focus:
Biodiversity loss, land degradation and climate change are inextricably connected, and so are many of the solutions. For example, land and oceans absorb more than half of all carbon emissions, and conservation and restoration of these natural spaces could provide roughly one-third of the mitigation efforts needed in the next decade.
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature. First passed in December 2022 at the U.N. Convention on Biodiversity biannual meeting (COP 15), it aims to guide global action for nature toward 2030 through four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030.
