As we approach Thanksgiving, the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department would like to remind our community about the dangers associated with turkey frying. Deep frying turkeys has become a popular way to prepare the holiday meal, but it also presents significant fire risks if not done properly.

Each year, turkey fryers are responsible for hundreds of fires, injuries, and property damage across the country. To keep you and your family safe this Thanksgiving, here are some essential safety tips:

Turkey Frying Safety Tips

* Always fry your turkey outdoors - Never use a turkey fryer inside your home, garage, or on a covered patio.

* Choose a flat, level surface - Ensure the fryer is placed on a stable, non-flammable surface like concrete.

* Keep a safe distance - Keep the fryer at least 10 feet away from your home, deck, or any other structure.

* Thoroughly thaw your turkey - Ice or water on a frozen turkey can cause oil to splatter or boil over, leading to serious burns or fires.

* Do not overfill the fryer - Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overflowing hot oil when adding the turkey.

* Use the correct oil temperature - Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is heated to the recommended temperature. Overheated oil can ignite.

* Have a fire extinguisher ready - Keep a multi-purpose fire extinguisher close by, and never use water to extinguish a grease fire.

* Use Protective Gear - Wear long sleeves, gloves, and safety goggles to protect against splashes of hot oil.

* Supervise at all times - Never leave the fryer unattended, and keep children and pets away from the fryer.

Dangers of Turkey Frying

• Grease Fires: Overheated oil or oil spills can quickly ignite, leading to uncontrollable fires.

• Burns and Injuries: Hot oil can splash or spill, causing severe burns.

• Property Damage: Fryer fires can spread rapidly, leading to costly damage or loss of your home.

Thanksgiving should be a day of joy, not tragedy. The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department encourages everyone to prioritize safety when preparing meals and celebrating with loved ones.
