Welcome to Siena Dean McCarthy

May 31, 2024

Siena will soon welcome a new dean of the School of Science: Anne McCarthy, Ph.D., will start at Siena on July 1. She succeeds John Cummings, Ph.D., professor of physics, who will resume teaching and research full time.

"I am honored to serve as the next dean of the School of Science at Siena," said McCarthy. "While interviewing, I was struck by the environment of mutual respect and admiration established among students, faculty, staff, and administrators."

McCarthy currently serves as associate vice president for academic affairs at Wayne State College in Nebraska. She was previously interim associate vice president for academic affairs at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, where she also taught mathematics as a full professor.

She said the opening of Nobel Hall and the emergence of new academic programs make it an exciting time to come to the College.

"The student experience in Siena's School of Science is characterized by personal relationships with dedicated faculty, engagement in rigorous hands-on learning, and access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities," she said. "I'm very much looking forward to being a part of the community. Siena masterfully upholds its Catholic and Franciscan identity while also innovating and adapting to meet the current needs of students and communities. This produces graduates with both the professional qualifications and personal character to positively impact society."

Provost Margaret Madden, Ph.D. welcomed the new dean.

"Dr. McCarthy's experience in academic administration, teaching, enrollment management and institutional planning will be tremendous assets not only to the School of Science but to Siena College as a whole," said Madden. "We look forward to her vision and dedication being part of our team as we foster our community of growth and learning."

McCarthy holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from Northwestern University and a B.S. in mathematics from the University of San Francisco.
