Disaster Assistance Available to Very Low to Moderate Income Sumter Residents

Very low, low and moderate-income Sumter County residents can apply for grant assistance up to $10,000 through the State Housing Initiatives Partnership Program (SHIP) to help with damages due to Hurricane Milton.

Funds will be awarded to applicants in need of home repairs directly caused by a disaster that is declared by an Executive Order from the President or Governor. Repairs may include:

  1. Immediate threats to health and life safety (sewage, damaged windows, roofing) in cases where the home is still habitable.
  2. Debris removal.
  3. Replacement or reinstatement of utilities to the home.
  4. Imminent residual damage to the home (such as damage caused by a leaking roof) in cases where the home is still habitable.
  5. Repairs necessary to make the home habitable.
  6. Repairs to mitigate dangerous situations (exposed wires, for instance).

SHIP assistance will only be provided for homes that are owner-occupied and used as a primary residence. Proof of Homestead Exemption is required and all property taxes must be current.

Mobile, modular, manufactured homes are not eligible for this assistance. If the homeowner is insured, proceeds from the insurance and other sources must be used first before SHIP funds, except for payment of the deductible. It is not a requirement for the homeowner to have insurance prior to the disaster. Assistance is provided on a first-qualified, first-served basis.
