AI Readiness Assessment Methodology Validation Workshop in Antigua and Barbuda Sets precedent for expanding Equitable and Ethical AI Development in the Caribbean.

Across sectors ranging from legislation to healthcare, AI is becoming increasingly integrated into daily life. However, as its usage continues to expand, risks are also emerging. It is imperative to develop policies that foster the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies across all sectors.

The Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Validation Workshop, hosted on the 27^thof September 24 by the Ministry of Information, Communication Technologies (ICTs), Utilities and Energy of Antigua and Barbuda and UNESCO, in partnership with the University of the West Indies, Five Islands Campus, marked a critical milestone in the advancement of responsible AI governance in the Caribbean. Key stakeholders from Antigua and Barbuda, including Hon. Melford Nicholas, Minister of the Ministry of Information, Communication Technologies (ICTs), Utilities and Energy of Antigua and Barbuda were on hand to support the workshop's goal to pinpoint areas for improvement and establish the next steps for finalizing the RAM implementation in Antigua and Barbuda.

In her opening remarks, Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, expressed deep appreciation for the Government of Antigua and Barbuda's steadfast commitment to strengthening national capacities in AI governance, with tailored support for effective AI frameworks, setting a standard for the Caribbean region.

During the workshop, participants from various sectors-including government ministries, academia, civil society, and the private sector-collaborated to refine and validate the RAM. Participants provided suggestions to reinforce the RAM through an additional round of national consultations, highlighted the importance of enhancing awareness-raising through public education campaigns, and developed policy recommendations for inclusion in the final report. Participants also acknowledged access and availability to quantitative data were a key challenge.

As AI continues to shape the future of societies worldwide, the Caribbean stands at a pivotal moment to ensure that its development is equitable and ethical. The RAM Validation Workshop is one of the many steps being taken to prepare for a future where AI serves as a tool for public good, supporting sustainable growth and human dignity in the region. The workshop reflected Antigua and Barbuda's proactive role in promoting the responsible design and development of AI technologies.

UNESCO's Readiness Assessment Methodology, developed to support countries in operationalizing the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, offers a robust framework for assessing national AI readiness. It serves not only as an assessment tool but also as a guide for strategic planning, ensuring that AI development aligns with ethical principles, human rights, and public good. Antigua and Barbuda is one of the more than 50 countries, globally, undertaking the Readiness Assessment Methodology. Through a comprehensive mapping of stakeholders, consultations, interviews and research analysis, the implementation of the RAM has progressed steadily.

With UNESCO's continued support, Antigua and Barbuda is in a strong position to advance AI readiness efforts across the region, paving the way for other Caribbean SIDS.
