Traffic shift planned next week on U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City

All lanes and ramps expected to reopen week of Nov. 4

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Bridge work on U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, between the Missouri River Bridge and Missouri Boulevard, has required traffic to be in a head-to-head configuration since mid-July as contractors working with the Missouri Department of Transportation rehabilitate the bridges over U.S. Route 50 and McCarty Street. That work is wrapping up and traffic will be moving back to normal patterns over the next two weeks.

Week of Oct. 28:

• All current ramp closures will remain in place.
• Traffic will no longer be in a head-to-head configuration.
• Median work will require the inside lane of U.S. Route 54 to remain closed.

Week of Nov. 4

• All lanes of U.S. Route 54 open.
• All ramps to and from U.S. Route 54 open.
• Some nightly lane closures on U.S. Route 50 under U.S. Route 54 may be necessary.

"Considering the unexpected deterioration and more extensive repairs, it could have caused major delays," said MoDOT Resident Engineer Chris Brownell. "But the contractor's been able to make significant progress and we'll be able to get traffic back to the normal the first week in November."

Congestion and back-ups during peak travel times are a possibility through the end of construction. Motorists are urged to slow down, use extra caution, and be patient when traveling through the work zone.
