City Council will hear proposal on illegal use of ATVs

Oct. 7, 2024 - The City Council will meet for its regular work and legislative sessions on Wednesday, with agendas that include a briefing on an ordinance dealing with the increased illegal usage of ATVs and dirt bikes on city streets.

The 1 p.m. work session and the 6:30 p.m. legislative session will be in chambers on the eighth floor of City Hall, 22 Lincoln St. The meetings will be televised on the city's stations, Cox 47 and Verizon 22. They will be streamed live at hampton.gov/livetv.

The afternoon work session will include a briefing on a proposed ordinance regulating the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-road motorcycles. After seeing a dramatic increase in calls related to the reckless use of ATVs and dirt bikes on public streets, Hampton raised the issue with the General Assembly in Richmond earlier this year. The state legislature responded with a bill allowing municipalities to pass ordinances that could lead to the seizure of such vehicles if they are used illegally or recklessly on city streets.

The evening legislative session will include a public hearing on a rezoning application by Cornerstone Custom Homes LLC related to the parcel of land at 67 W. Little Back River Road. The council will also consider appointments to the Hampton VA 250 Committee, the Citizens Police Advisory Group, and the Hampton Animal Response Team Advisory Committee.
