Chinese telecom operators are undergoing a transformation amid the AI revolution, reshaping customer service through artificial intelligence-driven innovations in public management, customer service and social service sectors, according to a report released on Wednesday by GSMA, an international association of mobile operators.
Moving beyond their traditional roles as network connectivity and infrastructure providers, they are evolving into information service innovators, data providers and intelligent service providers. With advantages in data resources, network coverage and extensive user bases, operators are actively exploring and implementing large model technology in vertical industries, infusing new vitality into their digital transformation.
The application of AI large models in vertical industries saw explosive growth in 2024, the report said. The maturation and optimization of large models have led to unprecedented accuracy and efficiency in practical applications, paving the way for deeper industry integration.
For example, China Mobile partnered with the water conservation industry for a flood control project in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, achieving real-time simulation, monitoring, prediction and optimization of the water system's operating status with AI and other technologies. China Unicom's smart office platform offers automated tools for office tasks, utilizing structured and unstructured data effectively.
"Operators leverage their robust network infrastructure to generate vast amounts of data. This data generation necessitates substantial computing power for support. The intelligent evolution of networks and the use of computing power work together, boosting network abilities and supporting different industries," said Sihan Bo Chen, GSMA's head of Greater China, in an interview with China Daily Website.
The user base of generative artificial intelligence products in China reached 230 million by June 2024, according to a report on the development of generative AI released by the China Internet Network Information Center last month.
