Overnight Fire on Huntley Street

Syracuse, NY- On Sunday, December 15, 2024, at 2:02 a.m., Syracuse Firefighters were alerted by the Onondaga County 911 Center to a reported house on fire at 127 Huntley Street. Firefighters from Station 9, on Shuart Ave, arrived at the scene five minutes later and found a two-story wood frame multi-family residence with smoke from the second floor. The Incident Commanders transmitted a signal '99', indicating a working fire.

As teams of firefighters moved hoses to the second floor, other teams of firefighters prepared to methodically search the entire building. Crews encountered blinding smoke and increasing heat as they searched for the fire. All occupants had evacuated the structure before the arrival of Fire Department personnel. A smoke detector alerted the occupant of the second-floor apartment to the fire. A hole was cut in the structure's roof to allow the smoke and heat out. The fire was extinguished approximately twenty minutes after being dispatched. Additional areas of the structure were checked to ensure there was no trapped fire or hot spots still burning, and the fire was declared out after approximately forty minutes. Crews remained at the scene for an additional two hours, clearing smoke from the building, cleaning up, and assisting investigators.

The building contains two apartments, and the fire occurred in the second-floor apartment. That apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage. Other parts of the building also suffered smoke and water damage. This fire displaced two occupants; the Red Cross is assisting them. Syracuse Fire Investigators have determined the fire started in the living room due to an accidental, undetermined failure of a space heater. Both occupants of the structure were treated on scene for breathing difficulties; one was transported to Upstate Hospital by AMR. One firefighter suffered a back injury and was transported to Upstate Hospital by SFD Ambulance.

A total of 37 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
