City secures $5.7 million from HUD's Lead Hazard Grant Program

The City of Fort Worth has received $5.7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of a $420 million nationwide initiative to eliminate lead-based hazards in homes.

Why is it important? The grant will help protect children and families from the dangers of lead exposure, with a focus on low-income households.

What's the plan? The funds will be used to identify and remove lead paint hazards in homes with children under 6.

What's the danger with lead? Lead exposure poses significant health risks, particularly for young children, whose developing nervous systems are especially vulnerable. Pregnant women and adults are also at risk, with potential side effects such as reduced fetal growth, preterm births, high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues and kidney damage.

City media event planned: To celebrate the grant award, Neighborhood Services staff will host a press conference at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at New City Hall, Main Lobby, 100 Fort Worth Trail.
