Public Works' Week in Review for October 10, 2024

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

Corridor 3 Adaptive Traffic Signal Control Project Update

The Corridor 3 Adaptive Traffic Signal Timing project is back on track after brief delays from Hurricane Beryl. Corridor 3 consist of all traffic signals on League City Parkway from Maple Leaf to Isla Vista. All hardware has been installed and we are currently programing all settings. We plan to have all needed items completed and the adaptive running in the background by the end of October. We will be able to watch the signal timing recommendations in the background then decide if the system is ready for full activation. It typically takes a few weeks to watch the background operations then we can fully activate the adaptive signal timing control. More information will be provided when the adaptive signal control timings are activated.

Northside Booster Pump Service

While performing preventative maintenance at our North Side Booster Pump Station. The maintenance team performed vibration analysis to all four pumps and motors as a part of a proactive approach to increase asset reliability and reducing the risk of failure. Data gathered and recorded indicated a possible pump failure. With the noticeable increase of harmonics and vibration indicated pump service was needed. After further inspection it was determined that the elevated harmonics and vibration was due to worn turbine vanes. This pump reached its peak service performance of 10 years. A typical service or repair is needed, which includes disassembly, clean/sandblast, inspect components, new case wear ring, new mechanical seal, new bearings, new hardware, dynamically balance impeller, balance report, new gaskets/O-rings, prime and paint.

Rubber Tire Roller Repair

The City of League City rubber tire roller came in with a flat tire and a hydraulic leak. The fleet mechanics have torn the unit down to diagnose the concern and determine what parts are needed to make the repair.
