On Friday, 15 November 2024, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Giannis Kefalogiannis visited the Special Child Care Centre, which operates in a specially designed area in Piraeus Naval Hospital, accompanied by Chief/HNGS Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras HN.
He was welcomed there by HNGS/MEDICAL DTE Director Rear Admiral Antonios Papageorgiou (MED) HN, the Director of Piraeus Naval Hospital Commodore (MED) Soterios Moraitis HN and the Director of the Special Child Care Centre Rear Admiral (MED) Dimosthenis Damianos HN.
Mr Kefalogiannis was briefed on the organisation, the mission, the work and the recent activities of the Centre, was given a tour of its premises, he discussed with the scientific personnel and extended his congratulations for the important social contribution taking place at the Special Child Care Centre.
Upon conclusion of the visit, the Deputy Minister made the following statement:
"With great pleasure, I visited today the Special Child Care Centre, the first organised Public Centre all over Greece, which provides for 18 years therapeutic and learning support to the children of the Armed Forces members, civilian employees of the Ministry of National Defence, Security Forces and Port Authority members.
Today there are 195 children accommodated at the Special Child Care Centre of pre-school and school age, who exhibit neurodevelopmental, psycho-social and learning difficulties, as well as behavioural disorders, whereas there is counselling support for their families. I would like to congratulate, from the bottom of my heart, the specialised scientific personnel of the Centre for the truly important work they perform for society and the Armed Forces. It is the real proof that the Armed Forces support the institution of family.
I assure them that the political and military leadership of the Ministry of National Defence will be by their side in every effort they make. In this context, the Bill we presented in the Ministerial Council with the Minister includes a series of structures' establishments, supportive to the Special Child Care Centre. We feel the need to inform further our members on these matters and for this reason we organise, on 2 December, a great event in the Pentagon regarding sensitisation matters concerning autism".
