Wind Symphony Concert: 'Pillars'

Wind Symphony Concert: "Pillars"

Music, Department of Friday October 18, 2024

Thursday, Oct. 24 Guest artist and dancer, Laura Towner, will perform at 7:30 p.m. during Georgia College & State University's annual Wind Symphony concert in Russell Auditorium. This year's theme, "Pillars," contains classics ranging from the early 20th century to the year 2000-all considered 'pillar' mainstays in wind band music repertoire. Like the autumn-with its bright colors but impending hibernation-the music is mostly upbeat with folk melodies but also contains a little darkness in Giuseppe Verdi's requiem, "Dies Irae's." Wind students will perform flutes, clarinets, saxophones, horn, trumpets, trombone, tuba and percussion. From Milledgeville, Towner is an undergraduate at the University of Georgia double majoring in dance and exercise/sport science. She grew up performing in Georgia College's Community Dance Program and danced in numerous GCSU productions, like The Nutcracker and Dance Spring Concert. During this event, Towner will dance to Percy Aldridge Grainger's "Australian Up-Country Tune," a simple melody emulating the composer's homeland of Australia. This concert will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/GCMusicDepartment. A $5 donation is encouraged. Online donations can be made at give.gcsu.edu/g/department-of-music/. All proceeds benefit music scholarships or the GCSU Department of Music through GCSU Foundation, Inc. For more information, please email [email protected] or call 478-445-8289.
