TAMPA (Nov. 6, 2024) - Sidewalk Stompers will celebrate a rescheduled National Walk/Bike to School Day on November 6th with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor by welcoming students walking and biking to Adum K-8 Magnet School.
Nationwide, Walk to School Day was October 9th. Locally, Adum K-8 and other schools chose to reschedule their events following hurricane cancellations as a way to celebrate their resiliency and continued commitment to student wellbeing.
"National Walk to School Day recognizes the importance of giving children safe and healthy routes to school," said Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers. "Keeping kids active and engaged in their community improves not just their own health, but the health of our whole city. This event is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how community and government can work together to build safe routes to school."
"We all know our children are the future. We must do all we can to ensure they're able to get to and from school safely. It will always the be the right thing to do," said Mayor Jane Castor.
Adum is a new Hillsborough County school serving 1,100 students that opened August 12, 2024. Developing safe walking/biking routes for students arriving at the new facility required effective collaboration among Sidewalk Stompers, The City of Tampa's Mobility Department, Adum PTSA, the Hillsborough County Sheriff Department's crossing guard program, and Hillsborough County Schools. New crosswalks, new signage, and safety retrofits on existing roads were implemented this summer to support Adum students.
Hillsborough County hit a new participation record for this event with 39 district schools registered to participate. Following the hurricanes, 17 schools rescheduled their events.
Launched in 2018, Sidewalks Stompers is an award-winning advocacy nonprofit, with programs that improve student health, mental wellness, community connections, and road safety. Sidewalk Stompers currently partners with 18 Hillsborough County public schools, reaching over 2,000 students with Walk to School programs. The organization's vision is a new generation engaged in active transportation, growing up healthier and better invested in their community.
Sidewalk Stompers would like to thank AtkinsRealis (https://www.atkinsrealis.com/ ) for sponsoring this year's events.
