Mitchell Davis awarded the 2024 Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize

Sydney, 20 September 2024

Mitchell Davis has been awarded the 2024 Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize for orange and blue (tent study). The prize was announced last night in Sydney from The Art Space, a new public gallery in Macquarie's new global headquarters at 1 Elizabeth Street.

Mitchell lives and works on Gandangara country in the NSW Southern Highlands. In his textile and assemblage-based work he explores cycles of damage and repair, repurposing sentimental materials to redefine their associations and explore ideas of masculinity and identity.

Now in its 12th year, the Emerging Artist Prize aims to support and highlight the next generation of Australian artists. Artists in the early stage of their careers are invited to enter an original work/s that reflect the Collection's theme, The Land and its Psyche.

The Emerging Artist Prize was judged by artists Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro and Mitchell will receive $20,000, with orange and blue (tent study) to be acquired by the Macquarie Group Collection.

The Highly Commended Award and the Nick Waterlow OAM Highly Commended Award were also presented last night to Lee Coulthard for Imaginary Signals in Blues and Greens and Rhy Dyball for Untitled, respectively.

Helen Burton, Director of the Macquarie Group Collection said: "Congratulations to Mitchell, Lee, and Rhy and to all of the finalists for creating such exceptional works. The finalists' pieces, and all of the submissions we received, truly reflect the depth of talent of Australian artists."

The Emerging Artist Prize exhibition will be available for viewing from 20 September to 10 January 2025 and can also be viewed online. The Art Space is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and is located on Level 2 of 1 Elizabeth Street, Sydney.
