Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente announced that President Claudia Sheinbaum's participation in the G20 meeting has attracted significant attention from various heads of state attending the November 18-19 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Foreign Secretary reported that President Sheinbaum, the only female leader to confirm her attendance, will take part in two plenary sessions where heads of state will address issues including the fight against hunger and poverty, and reforms to global governance institutions.
During his participation in the morning press conference led by President Sheinbaum, Secretary De la Fuente said that the President has expressed interest in joining the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative proposed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to G20 members, which is expected to be one of the outcome's of this year's G20 Summit.
"Mexico has presented its successes and results from programs such as Sowing Life, Youths Building the Future, the Bienestar pensions for older adults, and other social programs that President Sheinbaum has introduced as part of her government agenda," he stated.
The President announced that she will bring proposals to the G20 Summit to assist the world's most vulnerable populations and advance women's rights.
"We will proudly represent our cultural strength and showcase Mexico's achievements. We will speak from our perspective, emphasizing that the market alone does not solve problems-while markets have their place, rights must be protected," she stated.
She emphasized that, at the Summit, she will promote relationships based on equality-never subordination-with other nations.
Secretary De la Fuente said that Mexico will also advance initiatives related to gender equality, sustainable development, culture, and the digital agenda in artificial intelligence.
He reported that President Sheinbaum Pardo is currently the only female head of state confirmed to attend the forum, which brings together 19 countries plus the European Union and African Union. Her presence has generated considerable interest, particularly from leaders of Canada, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom, who have requested bilateral meetings that are being arranged.
Strengthening the Humanitarian Mobility Model
The Foreign Secretary reported that the Interministerial Commission on Migration, which has held four meetings during this administration, will continue strengthening the Humanitarian Mobility Model to protect migrants' rights and address root causes.
"This innovative model has proven effective by addressing all aspects of the migration cycle-origin, transit, destination, and return-through a multidisciplinary approach," he explained.
He reported that from December 2023 to date, irregular border crossings at the northern border have decreased by 76 percent.
