September is National Preparedness Month

It's National Preparedness Month and a good reminder to know the difference between 9-1-1 and 2-1-1.

  • 9-1-1 is for immediate help with crimes happening now and life and property threatening situations. Call 9-1-1 when you need an immediate response from police, fire and emergency medical services. For more information about when to call 9-1-1, visit https://www.sonomasheriff.org/911.
  • 2-1-1 connects you with health and social services for adults, children and families and provides you with information about resources for substance abuse, mental health, education, legal assistance and much more! For more information about 2-1-1, visit https://www.unitedwaywinecountry.org/2-1-1/.

Plus, one less spark equals one less wildfire, so let's all do our part to prevent them:

  • Mow your lawn before 10 a.m. - keep a fire extinguisher or hose nearby and never mow if it's windy or excessively dry.
  • Avoid using power tools that create sparks near dry vegetation.
  • Fully extinguish campfires - drown, stir, feel.
  • Keep grills away from dry vegetation.
  • Maintain vehicles to prevent sparks - secure all chains and remove dragging parts.
  • Follow local burn regulations and bans - plan, verify, apply.
  • Clear dry leaves and debris from your yard.

Pollution Prevention Week underway; Creek Week upcoming

Join Sonoma and Mendocino Counties for creek, river and ocean clean-ups to help protect our waterways. Pollution Prevention Week is underway and happening through Sept. 23. Creek Week in the Russian River watershed is coming up Sept. 22-29.

The Russian River watershed-home to over 150 creeks-provides water, wildlife habitats, flood control and recreation, but trash is a growing problem.
