[Kaohsiung News] Following Typhoon Krathon's impact, Kaohsiung City has prioritized repairs of critical damage, such as fallen trees and traffic signals. On Oct. 15, Mayor Chen Chi-mai presided over a municipal administrative meeting to review the progress of disaster relief efforts. He urged speeding up administrative procedures to expedite the distribution of relief funds. With flu season and potential COVID-19 surges approaching from October through March, Mayor Chen also encouraged citizens to get vaccinated to mitigate the risks of autumn and winter outbreaks.
For public infrastructure damaged by the typhoon, such as parks, sidewalks, and roads, Mayor Chen instructed the competent agencies to continue restoration efforts, incorporating recommendations from disaster relief assessments to refine standard operating procedures. He emphasized the need to fully support citizens in applying for disaster relief funds for agricultural and fishery losses, flooded homes, property damage, and vehicles affected by the storm, aiming for swift fund distribution. Additionally, each responsible agency and district office is required to quickly estimate the costs for post-disaster reconstruction to facilitate the securing of necessary financial aid.
As the autumn and winter seasons approach, with flu and COVID-19 peaks typically occurring from October through March, Mayor Chen Chi-mai has directed the Department of Health and relevant agencies to intensify their efforts in promoting the importance of vaccination. He urged eligible individuals, especially high-risk groups such as the elderly and young children, to promptly receive government-funded vaccines. Mayor Chen also encouraged the public to actively get vaccinated against both the flu and COVID-19, in order to reduce the risk of virus transmission during this period.
