Mayor's Message - October 2024

Dear Residents,

Fall is upon us, which means that the season of gathering is quickly approaching. As we prepare for what the coming months hold, it's equally important to focus on preparedness for yourself and your family. Whether it's the threat of wildfires or the possibility of an earthquake, being ready can make all the difference.

Earthquakes strike without warning. Be sure to prepare in advance by creating a family emergency plan, securing loose items in your home, and assembling an emergency kit. You can also purchase a Disaster Preparedness Backpack from the City, which comes ready to go with vital safety supplies.

The change of the seasons also brings the risk of wildfires here in California, and it's important to take steps to protect your home from threat by clearing flammable vegetation and materials from around your home and trimming trees and shrubs to create a buffer zone that can help slow the spread of fire. The Orange County Fire Authority provides great resources for wildfire prevention and preparedness on their website.

Another important part of disaster preparedness is knowing your evacuation zone. Knowing your zone will help you and your household get the most up-to-date, accurate information during a disaster. Aliso Viejo is divided into 22 evacuation zones; you can find yours here.

You can sign up for emergency notification programs, including AlertOC and Nixle, to receive important disaster-related updates via phone. We have also put together an Emergency Preparedness Guide for Aliso Viejo, which provides critical information that will help you prepare your household for the different hazards that can impact the City including earthquakes, wildfires, power outages, and more.

Being prepared is not just about having the right supplies, it's about ensuring that you and your family are informed and ready to act. Let's take the time to review and update our emergency plans. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and together, we can build a more resilient community.
