Augusta Utilities Advises Residents to Avoid Canal Towpath Due to Safety Concerns

The Augusta Utilities Department (AUD) is urging residents to avoid using the Augusta Canal Towpath until further notice due to safety concerns. The impact of Hurricane Helene has caused major damage including numerous trees down and several tree limbs to break, creating hazardous conditions with limbs hanging dangerously overhead.

For the safety of patrons to the towpath and to expedite the repair and cleanup process, it is critical to remain off the towpath. Unauthorized access to the towpath during this time not only places individuals at risk but also delays the work of crews and contractors tasked with making the area safe again.

Residents may continue to enjoy the canal from the Lake Olmstead Park to the Pumping Station or from Lake Olmstead to downtown for recreational or exercise activities. The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority, and crews are working diligently to assess and repair the damage. Currently, we do not have a timeline for cleanup and repairs. Updates on the towpath's reopening will be provided as repairs progress. We appreciate the public's understanding and patience as we work to restore this popular recreational space. If you notice additional hazards near the towpath, report them to 706-842-3060. Together, we can ensure the safety of our community and restore the towpath for public enjoyment as quickly as possible.
