DNR awards community & urban forestry grants

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Forestry has awarded $238,000 in grants to 10 communities and organizations to support tree planting and maintenance, education, tree inventory, and management projects.

The projects were selected by the DNR Community and Urban Forestry (CUF) program and are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Urban & Community Forestry program.

Communities and organizations receiving grants include -

• City of Plainfield-$25,000
• Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation-$25,000
• TREES Inc.-$25,000
• City of West Lafayette-$24,557
• Town of Nashville-$20,000
• Indiana Arborist Association-$14,650
• Indiana University (Indianapolis)-$13,800

Additionally, the DNR awarded a Natural Disaster Recovery grant to Indiana University's Bloomington and Southeast campuses, each of which received $20,000 to plant trees after a tornado and other severe weather events.

Also, the DNR awarded the city of New Albany a State Urban Forest Resilience grant of $50,000 to treat ash trees for emerald ash borer (EAB) and to plant trees in locations where EAB killed ash trees.
