Colusa County Announces Application Process for Three Elected Vacancies

(COLUSA, CA) October 16, 2024 - Colusa County has announced opening the application process for filling three key elected positions: District Attorney, Assessor, and Treasurer-Tax Collector/Public Administrator. The District Attorney position is currently vacant following a recent gubernatorial appointment, and the Assessor and Treasurer-Tax Collector/Public Administrator are both retiring from their elected roles on December 31, 2024. The Colusa County Board of Supervisors invites qualified individuals to submit letters of interest for these critical roles serving the people of Colusa County.

Vacancies and Terms

District Attorney: The term of office for the District Attorney will be from the date of appointment through January 2, 2029. This unique six-year term aligns with the Presidential election cycle, after which the position will return to a standard four-year term.

Assessor: The successful appointee will serve the remainder of a four-year term from January 7, 2025, to January 5, 2027. This position will be up for election in June 2026.

Treasurer-Tax Collector/Public Administrator: The successful appointee will serve the remainder of a four-year term from January 7, 2025, to January 5, 2027, with the position up for election in June 2026.

Candidates must meet the requirements set forth in the relevant sections of the California Government Code, in addition to being registered voters in Colusa County at the time of swearing into office.

Resignations of Long-Serving Officials

Daniel Charter, Treasurer-Tax Collector/Public Administrator, is retiring after an illustrious 38-year career. Starting his service in 1987, Mr. Charter has been recognized as the longest-serving Tax Collector in the state. In his resignation letter, Charter stated, "I have enjoyed working for the County over the past 38 years and have enjoyed beating every other county in the state for most of those 38 years on yields on investment."

Arnold Gross, Assessor, is retiring after 40 years of service, with the last 10 as the elected Assessor. Mr. Gross expressed his gratitude in his resignation letter, "It has been an honor to serve the people of Colusa County. It has been a challenge but at the same time very rewarding."

Brendan Farrell, District Attorney, was sworn-in as a Judge in the Colusa County Superior Court on Wednesday, October 16th following a 14-year career in the Colusa County District Attorney's Office. Details on Mr. Farrell's gubernatorial appointment can be accessed here.

Application Process

Candidates interested in these vacant positions should submit a letter of interest, including confirmation of their qualifications per the applicable Government Code Sections accessed here. Letters must be submitted to the Office of the Board of Supervisors (547 Market Street, Suite 102; Colusa) no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
