IPA Secretary General in Canada to meet with IPA members and participate in IFRRO World Congress

At the end of September and beginning of October, IPA Secretary General, José Borghino met with the IPA's three Canadian members, in Toronto and Québec City before attending the IFRRO World Congress.

The members are the francophone l'Association nationale des éditeurs de livres, based in Montréal; and the anglophone Association of Canadian Publishers and Canadian Publishers' Council, both based in Toronto. Borghino discussed ongoing campaigns to redress the damage caused by the broadening in 2012 of fair dealing in the Canadian Copyright Act to include education. Borghino also met with IFEX, the Toronto-based global network defending and promoting free expression. He focussed on fostering collaboration with IPA's Freedom to Publish Committee.

Finally, Borghino joined Flávia Alves Bravin, IPA's representative on the board of IFRRO, in Québec City for the IFRRO World Congress. A meeting of publishers on the first day was followed by various keynotes and other presentations, many discussing the negative impact for authors and education publishers of the 2012 fair dealing amendments. Working closely with the Federation of European Publishers and the European Writers Council, the IPA advocated for a more representative decision-making on the IFRRO board especially in relation to Public Lending Right policies
