Nationwide day of education, advocacy on value of water is Oct. 17

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) is joining elected officials, water utilities, community leaders, educators, and businesses from across the country on Thursday, October 17, as part of the 10th annual "Imagine a Day Without Water," a nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water.

"As we recognize this day, we are reminded of the fundamental role water plays in our lives and the urgency of ensuring reliable access for all," said Ralph V. Yanora, PUC Commissioner and Co-Vice Chair of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Water, in his remarks at the PUC's Oct. 10 Public Meeting. "Recent catastrophic events, such as Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, have underscored how quickly circumstances can change and our hearts go out to those affected. We've seen these impacts here in Pennsylvania on a smaller scale during severe storms this year, reminding us that no community is immune."

Led by the Value of Water Campaign, the PUC is raising awareness about the role of water in our lives and the importance of investment in infrastructure. Much of our nation's water infrastructure is more than 100 years old, and the impact of aging water infrastructure is evident in communities where it is not repaired. A water main breaks every two minutes somewhere in this country.

"Imagine a Day Without Water" unites individuals, communities, and policymakers to advance greater and more equitable investment in water. Now is an excellent time to raise your voice to support the awareness, action, and investment necessary to ensure a healthy water future for all.
