On November 6, 2024, Bill Lee, the Governor of Tennessee, issued Executive Order No. 107to extend the state of emergency that was put in place on September 27, 2024, following severe weather and flooding in the state.
Among other provisions, the executive order grants the Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance the authority to direct Tennessee-licensed insurers to make reasonable efforts to assist policyholders who have experienced losses as a result of the severe weather. Specifically, when there is a delay in premium payment that appears to be the result of mail disruptions or policyholder displacement due to the severe weather, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) requests that insurers work with the policyholder before cancelling the policy. The TDCI also asks that insurers suspend cancellation or nonrenewal of policies for non-payment of premium due to these catastrophic events for at least 60 days from the effective date of the executive order, which went into effect on November 10, 2024, and will remain in effect until December 25, 2024.
