How to Make Thanksgiving Healthier, Happier for You and the Planet

Gathering for Thanksgiving as family and friends provides great benefits beyond eating delicious foods.

When we take time to slow down, pause, and gather, we reflect upon and recognize what matters most in our lives… our loved ones and our many blessings, privileges, and freedoms that we enjoy each day. Gathering and reflection turns naturally into gratitude and thanksgiving.

As you slow down and take the time to gather with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, we invite you to consider these helpful practices that can make your holiday even better. Enjoy!

The EPA estimates that our household food waste increases by about 25% during the holidays. Here are some worthwhile ways you can practice conservation in our kitchens:

Low Waste Grocery Shopping

Look at what you have before you decide on what you need.

Do your best to use a reusable grocery bag.

Cut down on your carbon footprint - shop local!

Make a list and stick to it!

Composting

Composting is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint.

If you can't compost at home, look for a local composting facility.

If you don't already compost, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to start!

Leftovers

Too many leftovers? Coordinate with a local shelter to donate your leftover food!

Before you start cooking, be sure that you need all the ingredients you're using. If you leave them unused items packaged, they're easy to donate.

Cut down on waste and help the community!

How to Sustainably Store Leftovers

Use glass containers, try using bowls and covering them with plates and look for jars to reuse.

If you're inviting dinner guests, welcome them to bring their own containers for leftovers to take home. Thanksgiving seconds are the best!

Remember your loved ones as you gather to make this Thanksgiving about giving thanks, not making waste.
