AI - Another Digital Twin? We, at Evonik are strong believers of a data driven digitalization. Basis of our approach is a norm based data model, which is implemented in all our applications along the Asset Lifecycle. Therfore, structured data was and is the basis for any Digital Twin. However many data points are hidden in old documents and these documents can help us to determine accuracy and completeness of such data. Artifical Intelligence (AI) is today on everybody's mind as the new "holy grale" which will solve all data management issues. Is this really true? We look at AI as possible solution in two directions: to the past and into the future. For the past: Can AI solve the challenges of data migration, data quality and consistency? Will AI help us to conserve know-how and make it accessible for the next generation engineers, maintenance and operation personnel? For the future: How can AI applications generate the biggest value based on existing data? There are no easy answers - but how to approach these questions? What are the biggest challenges?

Based on a University Degree in Engineering and Computer Science I started my career at Evonik (Degussa at that time) in 1988 in R&D establishing the early digitalization solutions in labs. Afterwards I spent more than 25 years in IT holding various global positions in project management, communication operation and client support. Approximately 10 of these years I worked in the US and in Singapore. The last 7 years I moved to Technology and Infrastructure developing, implementing and deploying Evonik's data driven CAE solution with the strong focus on data integration.

Although I started my career at Evonik in 2013 with a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, I quickly became involved in the digitalization of chemical plants. From 2015 onwards, I worked as a SmartPlant P&ID administrator. In this role, I empowered teams to maximize the use of their P&IDs and P&ID data integration. Since 2019, I have been working as a solution architect for Evonik's data-driven CAE solution, with a strong focus on data integration, as well as setting up an agile framework for development and supporting Evonik's solution.
