Prime Minister Golob meets with representatives of the Slovenian automotive industry

18. 10. 2024
At the initiative of Prime Minister Golob, a meeting was held today with representatives of the Slovenian automotive industry to discuss current trends and challenges facing this key economic sector.

Alongside the Prime Minister, the meeting was attended by Minister of Finance Klemen Boštjančič, Minister of the Economy, Tourism and Sport Matjaž Han, and Minister of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Luka Mesec.

The discussions focused on the situation in European markets, which present many uncertainties, and on finding solutions to improve the Slovenian automotive industry's long-term competitiveness and resilience in an increasingly unstable environment.

After the meeting, Minister of the Economy, Tourism and Sport Matjaž Han, along with GREMO Coordinator Iztok Seljak, presented the key conclusions. Minister Han began by noting the significant changes in the automotive industry over the past two decades. "In 2000, 18 million cars were produced in Europe; today, that number stands at 13 million. Our global share of car production has dropped from 32% in 2000 to 15% today. Slovenia, as a country with a developed automotive industry, is well aware of this decline," he emphasised.

Minister Han explained that, given the challenging circumstances, the Slovenian automotive industry had chosen to work with the Slovenian automotive cluster through the GREMO Mission. "The State has recognised the need to invest in this automotive cluster, and we plan to allocate around EUR 200 million to it over the coming years," he stated, adding that the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport is actively working to remove red tape.

Minister Han also highlighted that the green transition has significantly impacted the European automotive industry, making it essential for the sector to focus on new technologies and invest in these processes.
"I am pleased that our industry remains in relatively good shape and that we will weather the current economic situation, preparing ourselves for the challenges ahead," concluded Minister Matjaž Han. He added that the Prime Minister and ministers would meet with representatives of this sector again in three months' time.
