Canal Replacement Program Aims to Secure Our Water Future

Contra Costa Water District marked a pivotal moment in regional water history 84 years ago-on Aug. 18, 1940-by delivering the first drops of water through the Contra Costa Canal to the City of Pittsburg. This significant event was celebrated with a three-day Water Fiesta, underscoring the canal's vital role in our community's development and well-being.

Today, the Contra Costa Canal continues to be instrumental in providing reliable water to over half a million residents. It's not just a channel for water; it's a lifeline that supports our economy, environment, and daily lives. As we recognize the many benefits this waterway has provided our area, it's essential to look to the future and the need to upgrade it for our future generations.

Contra Costa Water District's Canal Replacement Program, currently in the design stages, aims to replace the aging open canal with a modern, fully enclosed pipeline system. This transformation will not only safeguard against environmental risks and potential contaminations but will also improve the efficiency and security of our water delivery system.

The upgrade is essential for delivering on our commitment to provide reliable water services. As the original canal system approaches its ninth decade in use, it increasingly requires significant repairs and maintenance. By transforming the canal to a pipeline, we ensure that our region will continue to receive the same reliable water service that the City of Pittsburg celebrated back in 1940.

Investing in the Canal Replacement Program is investing in our community's future. Just as the Contra Costa Canal was a cornerstone of development decades ago, its modernization will be the foundation for future growth, stability, and resilience in water management.
