Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple Health Clinicians Win Prestigious Cancer Care Team Award From the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer

A team of lung cancer specialists from Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple Health was recently recognized by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) as the winners of the North American Cancer Care Team Award (CCTA).

PHILADELPHIA (November 19, 2024) - A team of lung cancer specialists from Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple Health was recently recognized by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) as the winners of the North American Cancer Care Team Award (CCTA) during this year's annual meeting in San Diego.

The CCTA recognizes a single institution in several geographic areas - North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the rest of the world - that provides exceptional care for patients with lung cancer and thoracic malignancies. Patients, survivors, caregivers, partners, and family members nominate the teams. The Fox Chase/Temple Health team is the only one in North America honored with the award this year.

"This is really an all-inclusive team award. It shows that patients do pay attention to all these details. They don't just notice what the physician says or does, but the support that the nursing staff and social workers provide as well. It makes you feel appreciated to know that patients see those extra steps needed to take care of the lung cancer patient population," said Hossein Borghaei, DO, MS, Chief of the Division of Thoracic Medical Oncology at Fox Chase, who was the lead nominee for this award.

Borghaei was honored along with the following Fox Chase and Temple Health care team members:

Stephanie E. Weiss, MD, FASTRO, Chief of the Division of Neurologic Oncology and a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase;

Shelly Hayes, MD, Director of Fox Chase Cancer Center Buckingham and an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase;

Scott Shepard, MD, Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at Temple University Hospital and Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University;

Mary Ellen Sileo, Radiology Support Services, Fox Chase;

Kerry V. Januszka, RN, BSN, Radiation Oncology, Fox Chase;

Terri McGowan, RN, ONC, Ambulatory Care Clinic, Fox Chase; and

Halyna Matviyishyn, RN, Clinical Research Nurse, Fox Chase.

"We have so many wonderful physicians, nurses, and teams here. We also have a strong connection among different physician groups such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgery. We all work together as a team to provide the best care for patients," Borghaei said.

"This award is just an example of the kind of care that people can get and expect to get at Fox Chase and Temple Health regardless of the team that they see," he added.

The IASLC is the only global organization dedicated solely to the study of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. Its membership includes more than 10,000 lung cancer specialists worldwide. The association also publishes the Journal of Thoracic Oncology and the JTO Clinical and Research Report, which focus on prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of all thoracic malignancies.
