What Are Conditionally Approved COLAs

December 16, 2024│Office of Communications

You may have noticed that some of your alcohol label applications in COLAs Online show a status of Conditionally Approved.Conditionally Approved is not a final status; it requires action on your part to be approved.

We developed this status to streamline the label approval process by allowing us, under limited circumstances, to propose changes to the information you entered in COLAs Online to make it consistent with the label you submitted with your application. The application fields in which we may propose changes as Conditionally Approved are Brand Name; Fanciful Name; Appellation (wine only); and Grape Variety (wine only).

Once you are notified by email of this status change, you have 7 days to review our proposed changes and either accept or decline them. If you accept the proposed changes, the status of the application will automatically change to Approved, with no further review required by TTB.

If you decline any of the changes or don't take any action within 7 days, the status is automatically changed to Needs Correction and you will see directions about what needs to be fixed before we can approve your COLA application.

For additional details you can view this webinar presentation on TTB.gov, which features an overview plus screenshots of what you'll see in COLAs Online when your application is in the Conditionally Approved status
