Department of Streets Announces Schedule For Construction To Begin On Race Street Between 6th And 8th

PHILADELPHIA - Streets Commissioner, Kristin Del Rossi announced today that temporary lane closures and parking restrictions to accommodate street construction will begin Wednesday morning, October 16^th, 2024, as part of the Franklin Square Pedestrian Improvements Project. The project consists of curb, sidewalk, ADA ramp and bike lane installation and improvements on Race Street between 6^th and 8^th Streets.

The Franklin Square Pedestrian Improvements Project has been awarded to Tony DePaul and Son and is expected to be completed by end of May 2025. The project is being paid for with Federal and City Funding.

Work will be completed in phases for parking island installation, ADA ramp bump out installation, bike lane resurfacing, and pavement marking installation, all which will take place in separate activities over the course of the next few months.

Parking will be impacted during the installation of new parking islands. Bike lane closures will be implemented, please follow all pedestrian and construction signage.

Temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted in advance of each scheduled activity for specific construction dates. Parking will be impacted during the installation of new parking islands. We ask that you abide by posted parking restrictions so that vehicles are not towed. In the event a car is towed, please contact the local Police Districts to determine its location.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling around the work areas. Bike lane closures will also be implemented, so please follow all pedestrian and construction signage.

While the Streets Department will make every effort to minimize disruption to traffic, residents are urged to plan ahead and use alternative routes when traveling through the project site. The Streets Department thanks residents in advance for their patience and cooperation as we work to improve city streets.
