Cherokee Nation shares history with Carl Albert State College during National Native American Heritage Month

SALLISAW, Okla. - As part of National Native American Heritage Month, Cherokee Nation is sharing its history and culture with Carl Albert State College in Sallisaw through a special exhibit.

"Cherokee Nation: A History of a People" is on display in the campus's Deloris Mitchell Library now through Nov. 27.

"The work to educate the public about who we are is never-ending, but November brings new opportunities to share our story to a receptive audience," said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. "We're honored to collaborate with Carl Albert for this educational effort and encourage the public to take a deeper dive into the history of the nation's largest tribe and the vibrant culture of the Cherokee people."

"Cherokee Nation: A History of a People" often travels with Cherokee Nation's Community & Cultural Outreach Program to meetings with at-large citizens across the U.S.

The exhibit showcases the history of Cherokee Nation, its people and culture from the tribe's inception to present day. Guests can learn about the operations of tribal government, the matrilineal clan system, the creation of the Cherokee language and more.

National Native American Heritage Month was designated in 1990 and is celebrated every year in November. It is a celebration of Native culture, traditions, languages and tribal sovereignty, showing a commitment to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous cultures.
