'Lee Erwin Day' recognizes long-running career in radio, community service

On October 27, 1974, one man's career in broadcasting began.

Although he was doing what he loved from the start, even Lee Erwin perhaps couldn't have envisioned at the time that, that career would eventually hit a 50-year milestone, and touch countless lives in Clarksville-Montgomery County along the way.

Now, and for always, the date when his radio career began will officially be known as "Lee Erwin Day" in Clarksville.

Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts made that official Friday morning in a visit to the studios of Five Star Media Group on Old Russellville Pike, where Erwin was presented a proclamation live on the morning Q108 radio show.

Mayor Pitts was joined in honoring Erwin by Montgomery County Director of Continuous Improvement Andrew Kester, on behalf of County Mayor Wes Golden, who likewise presented Erwin a proclamation from the County.

Also making an honorary presentation to Erwin was Clarksville Chief of Police David Crockarell, and several other City leaders were on hand.

Erwin said it was a moment he'll always treasure, and is honored to know that a day in the life of this community will forever bear his name.

His focus, he said, has always been his love for the community, and serving it in any way possible. In the proclamation, Erwin is honored for having spent 50 years being a familiar voice over the radio waves for everyone who calls Clarksville home.

He has championed the needs of others, being both frozen and buried alive to raise funds for the local Humane Society. He has spent time live and in person on a billboard, and participated in other astonishing stunts to raise awareness for various organizations.

Erwin is often sought out as an emcee for Clarksville events ranging from the March of Dimes and United Way, to the Montgomery County Millenium Commission and Riverfest. He has been president of numerous organizations including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Clarksville and Clarksville Crimestoppers.

A 2004 graduate of Leadership Clarksville, he is widely regarded as the "hardest-working man in Clarksville."
