Lyon, France (December 17, 2024) - Johnson & Johnson participated today along with the Government of France and health care leaders from around the world in the inauguration of the WHO Academy campus in Lyon, France. The Academy's launch of its online learning platform will help build a lifelong learning ecosystem that will ensure health workers receive the best training and opportunities available.

As part of its commitment to health equity, Johnson & Johnson has made a $7 million USD contribution to the Institut de France, a key partner in launching the WHO Academy and its mission to connect health workers with lifelong training and educational opportunities. The ceremony in Lyon was hosted by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"A strong and skilled health workforce is critical to providing quality care to patients, but many health workers face barriers to accessing the development opportunities they need to stay up to date on the latest advances in healthcare delivery," said Vanessa Broadhurst, Executive Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs, Johnson & Johnson, who attended the inauguration on behalf of the company. "That's why we are proud to support the Institut de France to launch the WHO Academy and its mission to provide lifelong learning opportunities for health workers."

Healthcare is advancing at a rapid pace, but many communities face gaps in accessing care. An equipped, trained and supported health workforce is needed to close these gaps and deliver medicine and technologies to communities, but many health workers face high levels of stress, burnout and other challenges including barriers to furthering their education and training. These factors are contributing to WHO's projected shortfall of 10 million health workers and nurses by 2030, which threatens the health of people around the world, and particularly that of communities that have historically been marginalized.1

The WHO Academy will help ensure health workers receive quality-assured training through the creation of standards for high-quality health courses and digital credentialing to enhance employment and professional advancement. It will also harness the latest advancements in adult and competency-based learning and new technologies, like digital innovations and state-of-the-art simulation centers, to offer a blended learning approach with both online experiences and in-person training opportunities at its Lyon campus.

These learning experiences are intended to be easily available and accessible for health workers, managers and decision-makers, and help guide them throughout their career development journeys. This comprehensive training and support for health workers is needed to help tackle challenges like cancer, improve access to mental health care and reimagine the future of surgical care.
