Mayor Danise "Deedee" Henriquez and the Key West City Commission, during the November meeting, honored Dr. Mark Whiteside for his amazing contributions to the community.
"Dr. Whiteside has continually exemplified the highest standards of leadership, compassion, and dedication," reads the proclamation, "serving as a pillar of strength in our community's public health response."
Dr. Whiteside is retiring at the end of the year as Medical Director the Florida Health Department in Monroe County, where he's served since 2008.
"Dr. Whiteside has been a champion for public health," reads the proclamation, "playing a vital role in managing and responding to numerous disease outbreaks, including flu, HlNl, Zika, HIV, Dengue, and others, preventing untold numbers of illnesses and saving countless lives."
His expertise in infectious and tropical diseases, as well as his research and clinical work with HIV, AIDS, and arboviruses such as Dengue, have had an immeasurable impact on the health and well-being of residents in Key West and throughout Monroe County. He has made significant contributions to public health in South Florida through his research, clinical work, and unwavering commitment to advancing community health.
"I couldn't have found a better place here on earth better to work than the Florida Keys," he said.
In addition to his public health work, Dr. Whiteside is an avid birdwatcher and environmental advocate, understanding the critical importance of environmental sustainability and contributing to efforts to preserve and protect the natural beauty and biodiversity of our region.
