All Removable Debris Cleared from East-Central Georgia State Routes

[Link]
Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) finished clearing all removable debris from all state routes in District 2 (east-central Georgia) on Monday.

It is important to note that some debris cannot be removed because it is wrapped up in power lines. In those instances, Georgia DOT must wait for the utility company to respond to ensure it is safe to handle the debris.

Georgia DOT maintenance forces spent Monday finishing debris removal in Burke, Emanuel, and Jenkins Counties.

Crews also revisited other locations across the district to move debris further away from the edge of the road to allow more room on the shoulder.

Work began Monday on sign repair across the district, starting with stop signs and yield signs.

Crews are riding routes to determine the extent of sign damage. Georgia DOT has video of state routes gathered before the storm showing where signage should be. We are comparing the old video with new video gathered by crews riding routes to determine where signs need to be replaced.

42 Georgia DOT maintained traffic lights are not working across the district due to power loss. This does not include non-operational traffic lights in Columbia and Richmond Counties, which are maintained by the county instead of Georgia DOT. We strongly encourage all drivers to obey Georgia traffic law, which requires you to come to a stop at a non-operational signal.

We have identified four Georgia DOT maintained traffic light sites that need to be completely rebuilt because of a collapse. We worked in Dublin on Monday. The other three sites are in Wrens.

Work continued Monday on State Route 86 on the Laurens/Treutlen County line, which has been closed because of a road washout. Crews are repairing a culvert, and they need to do some paving. We anticipate having this route open to traffic by mid-week.

In Jefferson County, State Route 296 remains closed between Warrior Trail and United States 1/United States 221 because of a road washout. We have entered an emergency contract with Reeves Construction Company. Work is expected to start this week. We anticipate it will take less than a week for the contractor to finish repairing the route.

We continue to stress the importance of limiting all non-essential travel. This helps our Georgia DOT crews perform their work quicker and safer.
