The Elgin Police Department is releasing today the body worn camera video footage of an officer involved shooting that occurred on January 13, 2024 in the 900 block of Oak Ridge Boulevard.
Officer Fernando Camacho on that date responded to a call reporting a suicidal subject. Preliminary investigation reveals that upon arriving on the scene at 1:28 a.m., Officer Camacho was directed inside the residence by the caller for assistance with a 29-year-old male subject. Officer Camacho entered the residence and observed the subject with obvious wounds to his neck and torso area. When Officer Camacho attempted to assist, the subject began struggling. The subject then obtained a knife and began stabbing himself before turning his attention to Officer Camacho while still armed with the knife. As the subject approached, Officer Camacho discharged his firearm, wounding the subject. Officer Camacho secured the subject and then began administering aid. The subject was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
Under departmental policy, Officer Camacho was transported to a local hospital after the incident for observation and testing. He is currently on paid administrative leave while independent investigations by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force and then by the City of Elgin are being conducted.
Chief Lalley said, "The department will continue to provide information and updates to this incident when available to meet the community's expectations for transparency, while being mindful of the need to balance the integrity of the independent investigation. The release of the body worn camera video is the next step in ensuring transparency occurs throughout the investigation."
