FACT CHECK: Alison Esposito Accepted Thousands From Central Hudson’s Lobbying Firm

During tonight's debate in New York's Eighteenth Congressional District, Alison Esposito completely avoided answering why she accepted thousands from Central Hudson's lobbying firm. Despite Central Hudson's push to raise rates and its disastrous back billing scheme, Esposito had no response - and the Manhattanite pretended not to know what Central Hudson was.

WATCH THE FULL CLIP HERE.

Here are the facts:

  • September 2022: Her campaign for Lieutenant Governor took $3,000 from Plummer Wigger PAC.

  • 2023: The New York state legislature took up a package of reforms aimed at curbing its billing issues by prohibiting utilities from back billing after more than three months, providing a 13-month history of charges with each bill, and expanding billing protections for small businesses.

  • July 2023: Central Hudson proposed raising its electric rates by 16 percent and its gas rates by 19 percent, equating to a roughly $1 increase per day for a typical consumer of each utility.

  • June 2024: Central Hudson was fined more than $60 million for a billing mishap that resulted in thousands of customers being overbilled or double billed, inflating electric bills by thousands of dollars in some cases.

Meanwhile, Pat Ryan successfully called for the CEO of Central Hudson to step down after egregious billing errors that overcharged his constituents.

DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
"Alison Esposito once again proved tonight she stands with big corporations over the middle class. Hudson Valley families will reject Esposito's costly agenda in November."
