Essential Tips for You and Your Family

As our climate continues to change, it's more important than ever to prepare for storms and the potential for flooding. Taking proactive steps now can protect your home, business and loved ones during a flood emergency.

Here's what you can do to be flood-ready:

Know Your Flood Risk

Start by understanding your flood risk. Visit valleywater.org/floodready to check if your home or business is in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Special Flood Hazard Area. This will give you insight into your flood vulnerability and help guide your preparation.

Get Flood Insurance

If you own or rent, now is the time to get flood insurance. Most standard property insurance policies, such as homeowner's insurance, do not cover flood damage. Visit floodsmart.gov to explore your options. Keep in mind, flood insurance policies often have a 30-day waiting period before they take effect, so don't wait until it's too late.

Make a Plan and Gather Supplies

An emergency plan and supplies are crucial. Develop a family emergency plan and ensure every household member knows what to do if a flood occurs. Assemble a 3-day emergency kit with essentials like water, food, medications, and important documents. Don't forget to include supplies for pets if you have them.

Be Prepared for a Flood Emergency

Stay informed during a storm by downloading disaster emergency apps on your smartphone. These apps can provide real-time alerts and updates. Also, know where you can pick up sandbags in your area before a flood event to help protect your property.

Keep Our Streams Clean

Flooding can become worse when streams and storm drains are clogged with debris and trash. To reduce flood risks in your community, be sure to dispose of waste properly and keep our waterways clean.

Avoid Flood Hazards

During a flood, shallow water can still be dangerous. Never drive through standing water, as it can hide hazards or be much deeper than it appears. Always prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary risks during a storm.

Don't Build Without Checking

If you're planning to build on your property, consult your city or county floodplain manager to ensure your project doesn't increase flood risk for you or your neighbors.
