The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film will present "Silent Sky," based on the life of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, at the Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre Nov. 15-24.

Brian Sage, a visiting artist in the Department of Theatre and Film, directs the production.

The UToledo Department of Theatre and Film presents a production of "Silent Sky," based on the life of 19th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, at the Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre Nov. 15-24.

Written by Lauren Gunderson, "Silent Sky" explores a woman's place in society during a time of immense scientific discovery, but when women's ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. The drama takes place at Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, when Henrietta Leavitt and her female colleagues are hired to chart stars for a renowned male astronomer as "human computers." The women are discouraged from participating in hands-on research or investigating their own astronomical theories.

As Henrietta attempts to measure the light and distance of stars regardless of these circumstances, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love.

" 'Silent Sky' uses a historical lens to explore issues and choices that women still face more than 100 years later," Sage said. "While women today have more autonomy than the women who are presented in this play, it's not hard to feel the tug of contemporary resonances as our students have been rehearsing in the lead up to a historic election to decide whether we will see our first female president and whether a Congress that is still predominantly male can make choices about women's bodies and overall reproductive health. 'Silent Sky' lets its women speak for themselves, on their own terms, and gives them the credit they so rightfully deserve."

"Silent Sky" is presented by arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection.
