Man charged with displaying Nazi salute in Newtown

Police have charged a man with displaying a Nazi salute during an event in Newtown yesterday.

About 2pm yesterday (Saturday 23 November 2024), officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command were attending a planned gathering in Newtown.

During the event, attendees began to engage in an approved march down Victoria Street, Camperdown.

As the group was marching, a man not associated with the event, stepped in front of the procession and allegedly displayed a Nazi salute and made threatening remarks.

The 20-year-old man was immediately arrested and taken Newtown Police Station.

He was charged with knowingly display by public act Nazi symbol without excuse and make a gesture in a public place that is a Nazi salute.

The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newtown Local Court on Tuesday 14 January 2025.
