Hardy, Va- Step back in time into a mid-19th century Christmas, to learn about the sights, sounds, and fragrances of Christmas as Dr. Booker T. Washington described it "Christmas Days in Old Virginia." The event will take place on Friday, December 6 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Booker T. Washington National Monument.
Examine what Christmas time was like for Booker and the nine enslaved on the Burroughs plantation. Learn about Washington's most memorable Christmas on the plantation in 1864. Nearly four years of Civil War had a tremendous effect on all the inhabitants of this plantation. As the enslaved endured continuing hardships their feeling of optimism brightened as the end of the War drew nearer.
Self-guided tours, music, and children's activities will begin at 3:00 PM. Candlelight guided tours will be offered every half hour beginning at 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM. Light refreshments provided while supplies last.
