Monroe County Executive Adam Bello Announces Progress With County Program To Create New Sidewalks In County Towns

Eight municipalities are taking advantage of County incentives to install sidewalks along county roads

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced today that eight towns are participating in a new program that incentivizes towns to add sidewalks along county roads. The Bello Administration's program will pay for half of the installation cost of the new walkways. The program is funded with $10 million from the county's unassigned fund balance. The County Legislature approved the plan in June.

"Sidewalks play a pivotal role in creating a walkable environment, encouraging physical activity, ensuring pedestrian safety and fostering a sense of community," said County Executive Bello. "One of the goals of our Active Transportation Plan is to increase the number of sidewalk miles in Monroe County. This initiative makes sidewalk installations more affordable and attainable for towns by providing up to 50% of the installation cost. I urge every town to take part in this program and invest in these infrastructure improvements for the benefit of their residents."

In the past, towns were responsible for fully funding the addition of sidewalks along county roads by requesting the walkways be included in a capital project. As the county Department of Transportation identifies road projects appropriate for sidewalk installations, the cost of the installation will now be incorporated into the overall cost of the capital project. The town will receive an inter-municipal agreement that offers a partial county subsidy for the sidewalk expenses.

"The County's funding of fully half the cost of the Tobey Road sidewalk is a fine example of the cooperative relationship between the Town of Pittsford and Monroe County," said Pittsford Town Supervisor William Smith. "Thanks to County Executive Adam Bello and to Pittsford's County Legislators Howard Maffucci, Mike Yudelson and Rick Milne, for helping us accomplish another goal in the Town's Active Transportation Plan. One more milestone in my commitment, and the Town's, to constantly improving pedestrian safety and walkability. Successful intermunicipal partnerships work, to the benefit of us all."

More than six miles of new sidewalks are now underway in eight communities through ongoing sidewalk initiatives. The locations include:

Brighton

• Allens Creek Road, north side, from Monroe Ave. to Schoolhouse Lane.
• Elmwood Avenue, north side, from 2700 Elmwood to I-590.
• Edgewood Avenue, west side, from Stonybrook Dr. to Monroe Ave.
• Westfall Road, north side, from Roosevelt Rd. to Monroe Ave. and south side, Del Rio Dr. to Edgewood Ave.

Brockport

• West Avenue, south side, from Briar Rose Lane to Carolin Dr.

Chili

• Paul Road, north side, from Hunt Hollow to Chili Ave.

Mendon

• Mile Square Road, north side, from Lehigh Valley Trail to Victor Mendon Road.

Penfield

• Plank Road, south side, from Shoecraft Rd. to Jackson Rd.
• Jackson Road, east side, from Plank Rd. to Penfield Center.
• Five Mile Line Road, east side, from Crossbow Dr. to Embury Rd.

Perinton

• Aldrich Road, east/west sides, from Aldrich Glen to Ayrault Rd. o Turk Hill Road, from Summit St. to Town Hall.

Pittsford

• Tobey Road, north side, from Clover St. to Cricket Hill Dr.

Riga

• Gilman Road, south side, from North Main St. to Spotts Circle.
