Dementia Training for Ohio EMS

Dementia Training for Ohio EMS is an education module that was created by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS in consultation with the Ohio Departments of Aging and Job and Family Services, as required by Ohio Revised Code 4765.162. The course includes instruction on the recognition of dementia, communication skills and supportive resources when interacting with patients with dementia, and the signs and symptoms of other medical emergencies that may mimic or accompany those associated with dementia.

Completion of this course is required for all Ohio EMS students and certified Ohio EMS providers. Per Ohio Revised Code 4765.162, accredited EMS training programs must provide a minimum of two hours of dementia-related training for initial EMS provider certification. Certified Ohio EMS providers must complete a minimum of one hour of dementia-related training to be eligible for renewal. Completion of the Dementia Training for Ohio EMS course fulfills one hour of the dementia-related continuing education training requirement. Although this course was created for EMS students and EMS providers, it is also beneficial and appropriate for all first responders and healthcare providers who may interact with individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

The Dementia Training for Ohio EMS course can be accessed via the Ohio Department of Public Safety's Public Safety Training Campus. The course number is WBT924. The State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services (EMFTS Board) has approved one hour of EMS continuing education credit for this education module, and a course completion certificate will be issued to those who complete the module and pass the post-course test.
