First-Generation students honored at awards luncheon

Lamar University celebrated the accomplishments of its first-generation college students on Friday, Nov. 8, at the First-Gen College Celebration Student Awards Luncheon, held in the ReaudExecutive Event Space.

Dr. Thomas Johnson, president of Lamar State College Orange, delivered the keynote address, sharing his own journey as a first-generation college graduate. His speech emphasized the transformative power of higher education and the importance of persistence.

"Being a first-generation student means overcoming challenges and setting a new course for your family," Dr. Johnson said. "Your hard work is breaking cycles and building legacies, and I am incredibly proud to celebrate each of you today."

Dr. Jaime Taylor, president of Lamar University, voiced his admiration for first-generation students, including Dr. Johnson, highlighting the unique challenges they face and commending their determination to succeed.

"As a first-generation college graduate himself, Dr. Johnson understands from personal experience the transformative power of higher education-not only for the individual,but also for their family and future generations," Dr. Taylor said. "This is a cause he's deeply passionate about."
