Washington Supreme Court Returns to the Temple of Justice on Capitol Campus in Olympia

October 23, 2024

The Washington Supreme Court will return to the Capitol Campus in Olympia next week, following a two-year renovation of the 112-year-old Temple of Justice building.

The first Supreme Court oral arguments will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and will be broadcast live on TVW. Since 2023, the Court has operated out of a temporary location in Tumwater, Washington.

"We are delighted to welcome the public back to the Temple of Justice on the Capitol Campus," said Chief Justice Steven González. "I thank everyone who helped us meet our obligation to administer justice openly through this renovation process, and to our dedicated staff who managed the relocations and move of the State Law Library."

The Temple of Justice first opened in 1912, as the first state capitol building to be built on the Capitol Campus. Renovations included replacing aged heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as lighting and plumbing systems throughout the building. The project cost approximately $33.5 million.

The Temple of Justice Building will reopen to visitors on Monday, October 28. Building hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitors can enter the building through the south-side entrance facing the legislative building. All members of the public will undergo security screening, which involves passing through metal detectors, emptying pockets into containers, and having bags visually inspected. Weapons are not permitted inside the Temple of Justice building in accordance with state law, see RCW 9.41.305; Carrying Weapons on Campus | Washington State Capitol Campus.

ADA access to the building is available through a secure entrance on the east side of the building facing Cherry Lane, see Campus Map | Washington State Capitol Campus.

Law Library services will be offered in the main reading room, opposite the courtroom at the foyer level, starting at 9 a.m. Monday-Friday, and at 8 a.m. on oral argument days. Members of the public are encouraged to check the catalog website in advance of visiting or call 360-357-2136 or email [email protected] for further information on hours and assistance.
