NEW POLLING: Majority of Hispanic and Latino Voters in Battleground States Support Gun Safety Policies

WASHINGTON - Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, Bold America PAC, and Global Strategy Group released a new polling memo showing that Hispanic and Latino voters across the country overwhelmingly support policies that would help reduce gun violence and are more likely to support a Democrat who will strengthen gun laws over a Republican who will oppose more gun restrictions.

"This polling makes it clear that a strong majority of Hispanic and Latino voters support common-sense gun safety policies, and rank reducing mass shootings and school shootings as a top priority," said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. "The data continues to underscore that gun safety is a political triple threat that mobilizes, persuades, and serves as a litmus test issue for voters across battleground states."

"Hispanic and Latino voters are clear: they are looking for candidates who will support common sense solutions to the gun violence epidemic that our communities face everyday," said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM), co-chair of BOLD America. "This poll shows that addressing gun violence is a top issue for Hispanic and Latino voters in this critical election cycle. We all want our communities to be safe from gun violence, and voters want their candidates to prioritize and clearly detail their gun violence prevention plans."

Key Highlights:

  • Support for a host of common-sense gun safety policies is broad and intense. Hispanic and Latino voters overwhelmingly support policies that would help reduce gun violence, especially requiring background checks on all gun sales (91% support), prohibiting domestic abusers from owning guns (92% support), and requiring gun owners to store their firearms securely (91% support).
  • Reducing school shootings and reducing mass shootings are among the top priorities for Hispanic and Latino voters (79% and 71% respectively) - on par with reducing the cost of everyday expenses like gas, groceries, and housing (78%), and even ahead of keeping criminals off the streets (71%) and making health care more affordable (68%).
  • Messaginghighlighting Republican opposition to common-sense gun violence prevention gives a Democrat a 16-point advantage over a Republican - that's nine points better than a Democrat who doesn't talk about gun violence prevention (+7D).

In July, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund announced a $45 million electoral program and the launch of a new grassroots voter contact program to help elect gun sense candidates and defeat gun extremists up and down the ballot in key swing districts and states. Everytown's efforts will focus on young voters on college campuses, voters of color, and suburban women in Arizona, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
